I keep a folder of interesting photographers and their websites for when I’m in need of a little inspiration. Most of the websites, I don’t remember how they even came to me and ended up in my folder. But, regardless, they are there! Today I want to share with you one of my current favorite artists: Dave Hill. You can take a look at his work here: Dave Hill Photography.
A lot of his work is used for advertisement, and understandably so. The pieces have a certain HDR quality that is both intriguing and marketable. The photos are so intricate and engaging that I can see why they would be used as ads. But I don’t think there’s anything wrong with being marketable. Some artists, particularly when younger, might stress the importance of not “selling out,” but it’s not selling out if you are just making the work you always make with the style you always use and just happen to be making money off of it.
Anyway, the images that Hill creates are a testament to the capabilities of digital photography. The images are incredible – I could just look at them forever. The website also features a really neat behind the scenes section, in which you can find videos of the shoots used to make the photographs. I loved the video for Girl on an Adventure – part of it shows the crew threading the corner of a model’s jacket so they can pull it back to make it look like it’s blowing in the wind.
Here’s a picture from the Girl on an Adventure series that I love. I would recommend anyone and everyone check out his website. It’s a stunner to your senses and a great example of the kind of work that I love to look at.
